Default polaris 380 and pump operation?

My prospective pool builder has recommended a two-speed, 1hp hayward pump for my pool. He also recommended a polaris 380 as an option. Does the pump have to be running in high speed mode for the 380 to work?

Does anyone have an opinion as to which option will use the least power?

    1) Polaris 380 running off the 1hp pump (pump has to run anyway right)

    2) Other automatic cleaner like the Dolphin that does not need the pump running

This pool will only have two users 95% of the time it's in use. Not a heavy bather load. I was hoping to be able to run the pump on the low speed at least part of the time.

    Thanks.

The Polaris 380 requires it's own booster pump and some form of timer to control that pump. It won't work properly in a single-pump system. It will work with the filter-pump on low speed. Your builder should know how to set this up.

Interesting. Gives me less confidence in the builder. He spec'd a separate line for the automatic cleaner which led me to believe it would run off the two-speed filter pump. I also asked him point blank if the the 380 could operate correctly while the filter pump was in low-speed mode. He said that he didn't think so.

The builder is actually the president of the local (and only) pool construction company. I'm not sure how involved he is in the technical details of the construction.

Anyone with an idea of the energy efficiency of the pressure-side 380 with its own pump versus a plug-in cleaner like the Dolphin. Thanks again.

buck1s, are you sure he doesn't mean the 360, which doesn't require a separate pump?

The 360 is what came with my pool.
