Sharon,
I live in S. Arkansas. We had a vinyl liner pool installed last year. The builder put a rock bed under the deep end and a pump so that we can pump water out from under the liner, if needed. It sounds like you may have the something similar. If so, your poolcrete or sand under the liner is probably eroding from the water under the liner. One reason we chose the vinyl liner was because we have a high water table and we were told that a gunite or fiberglass pool could float up out of the ground. As it is, we are suppose to keep water in our pool at all times. After heavy rains, we pump the water out of the rock bed.
Nonetheless, you probably need to contact a couple of builders in your area and find out what remedy would be best in your area. At the least, it sounds as though the liner will have to be removed and the bottom of the pool repaired. If you have to have a new liner, they are expensive. A 20 x 40 in S. Ark cost about 3000.00 installed. There are some sharp folks on this forum that may be able to advise you as well or better than a contractor. They may be able to tell you how to fix the problem yourself. Good luck.
