We're almost to the point that I can choose which railing I want. We're using all pressure treated lumber, but I love the look of the white vinyl railing in between treated lumber posts. I need more ideas though. Could you all post some pictures for me? Thanks!

Here's the gate I built and the railing. It's all cedar, and the gate is morticed and tenoned, with Gorilla glue. The 2x4 horizontals also have a pair of oak pin glued through the 4x4 uprights into the tenons, then covered with cedar caps to keep water out. Result? The gate doesn't sag even without diagonal supports. The latch and self-closing hinges are from Magna-latch, and it's all BOCA code.

The gate sill was my own creation, from two 2x6 pieces glued together then rabbitted to fit and shaped to be smooth and easy on bare feet.

There fence is 2x2 cedar pickets, topped by 2 2x4 rails, one horizontal, one vertical. The bottoms of the pickets have a 45deg angle cut and are nailed with stainless steel nails. The tops are screwed with stainless screws as well.

Yes, my pool is above-ground, completely.

    Dennis,
    Two things I noticed:
    1) Those gaps betweent the pickets have got to be 5 to 5 1/2". Where I live, they enforce the BOCA code that says the max gap is 4". I used a 2x4 as a spacer so mine are 3 9/16".

    2) The fence looks like it's 3' high. I made sure mine was 4' high, again to be on the safe side of code--it's a little ambigous for A/G pools but iron-clad for I/G...and they enforce gating restrictions rigorously. I had wanted the whole deck level to be pool deck but they forced me to fence between it and the pool because they said the sliding door from the house wasn't self-closing and self-latching.

I live in a tough town as far as enforcing code goes....

The pool fencing, being 4', meant that 4' pre-cut pickets were 6" to 8" too short

So I milled my own from cedar 2x4s...took most of the winter. But it was so much cheaper than buying 8' lengths and cutting them that it paid for a new table saw!

It's a friend of mine that does the decks, I have just helped a couple of times. I do beleive the 2 x 2's are 6" on center. They are not designed to pass any kind of code so those are good points to mention.
