Sand filters do not need to be cleaned, nor does the sand need replaced very often. I'm on my 7th season with the same sand. I think Al (Poconos) is on his 10th and CarlD is on his ....?? 6th? I can't remember, but I know it is several years. Also, you should not be getting leaves or other large debris in your sand filter. Those things should either be caught by the skimmer basket or the pump basket before they ever get to the filter.

Everyone has an opinion about the type of filter they like. I have always had a sand filter and it works well for me and causes me very little maintenance. My water is always clear. If a cartridge filter is working for you then you are lucky. A lot of people think they are a pain because you do have to clean the cartridges. My sand -- I never have to clean. Good luck with your pool.
