Doughboy Timberline used pool

I found a nearby used pool that might fit my needs. However I'm not sure what it is really worth or if it is too risky.

Doughboy Timberline "large pool". ~12'x20'x48'* with all kit equipment (except no liner) for $2000 OBO.
Owner said it is 4 years old from AquaQuip he bought for $15,000. (I'm guessing he included install price .) He said size was about 15' x 21'. From picture I see two small buttresses along sides. After several searches I finally found a web page describing Timberline III pool:

CONCERN: This pool is disassembled (which HRDennis warns against).
Q: What is a reasonable good deal for this pool?
Note owner posted 4 pictures.

CONCERN: Timberline is probably 48" tall.
Q: Will I regret not getting a deeper pool?
I was thinking of getting 52" or 54" tall pool then not filling up past 48" or 50" until my 6 year old son is a little taller.

CONCERN: Search for Timberline on PoolForum finds nothing.
Q: Does anyone have a db timberline or comments about this db model?


My situation & Criteria: Need pool for mild laps and up to 8 people at once. (Need more than donut pools we've used in past.) I have a 6.5yr kid and 9.5yr kid. My wife and I also love swimming. We have constrained backyard limiting to ~12'x24' oval. (I'll have to be careful about buttresses if I look at this model.) Solar heating and some decking are a must for us (and likely fence too) so if I can save a couple thousand dollars on a used pool I'll be doing good. Perhaps I can even pay to have someone install (saving my back and brain cells).

I've lurked a fair amount, mostly last fall . Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me. -Zephan

I think thats too much for a used pool that size especially since you have to buy a liner yet. You didn't say what the equipment was with it but that could make a huge difference. Also, its not put together? How will you know whats missing and whats damaged until you are all excited and putting it together, only to find out you need something that has to be ordered or whatever. Its the most dissappointing feeling ever. JMHO, but I think it is too much, if you shop around, you can really find EXCELLENT deals on new pools, delivered right to your door, even installed. Look at a buttress free pool, you can go larger in the same sized location if not getting a round pool. How big exactly is the yard space?

I agree with NWMNMom, the pool is way over priced. He may have paid around three thousand new for the pool and maybe another grand to have it installed. Around here used pools that size sell for between five hundred and a thousand. Subtract a couple of hundred if it is just a pile of parts.

The size should be either a 12 x 20 or a 16 x 24, they both have two braces on the sides. It could have straps meaning no deep area or it could be a strapless pool meaning you could dig out the center and use an expandable liner.

I would either negotiate a better deal or keep looking. Doughboy is a very good pool but keep in mind the Timberline series is the least expensive.

Thanks for the advice. I was planning to negotiate a better deal. Now I have a ballpark.

Also great to know Timberline is bottom of the line for db. I was guessing as much when I found it was only 48" tall.

I want to install just ONE pool (or have it installed) so I'll hold out for something better. Back to search mode. I'm sure I'll post a couple more thread along the way in the next few weeks.

FYI: My back yard has a nice deck we built 3 years ago, then a nearly-level space about 18' until closest part of our back fence. Given space requirements and our desire to have at least some new decking around the pool this pretty much constrains us to 12' wide. If I go wider I need to move the pool closer to a gentle downhill slope... and I don't want to dig TOO much to get level. I've read enough to know it must be L E V E L and building up to make an area level is not recommended.

I agree, pools of that size sell for anywhere from Free - $500 around me. As was said before, it depends a lot on the equipment.

New pools of that size can certainly be had for under $3000. I know several people on this forum just went through poolsupplies.com and had one delivered. They might be able to share some first hand experience.

For that price, I'm pretty sure you could get a new 54" 12x20 pool from poolsupplies.com.

I just bought a 18x33 oval from them, the atlantic pools j5000/vantage, and spent less than $3,000 out the door, including their deluxe accessories package, a pump/filter package of my choice, cove molding, wall padding, and a ton of other stuff...

By the time you pay for a liner, you'd have spent nearly as much on a used small pool as I spent on mine.

I'd run like heck from this deal.
