Default Sand Filter from 1982 - replace it?

    Hi,
If the water is crystal clear - does that mean the filter is working correctly?

I was thinking about replacing the sand in my sand filter which I think is an "HRP 24", 3.1 (Hayward?). That's all I can read of the old sticker on the filter because I found out from a call to Shasta (who built the pool) that the filter is from 1982!!!!!! So I was told the sand can't be replaced, it's too old and parts are discontinued. I'd have to replace the whole filter. Great....

The only reason I thought about replacing the sand is because:

    1. I've been running high chlorine levels all last year due to high CYA (100). I kept getting rashes on my arms the minute I came in contact with the water....

    2. I just drained the pool (2/3) to get CYA levels in check, so I can run a "normal" chem balance.

    3. I have no idea when the sand was replaced last. I bought the house 2 years ago.

Should I just leave it be since the water is clear?

    Thanks
    C

If the old filter is working, that is, normal pressure and flow, seems to be filtering properly, no sand in the pool, leave it alone. When comes time, it has done its job and doesn't owe the pool anything.

    Thanks guys!
Yes, it's definitely doing its job and really well. Even when I've been somewhat lazy at times the filter has kept things squeeky clean and free of algae so you're right, if it ain't broke...let the old guy be

    Thanks again,
