Died is a pretty general term. What actually happened to it? Smoke, seize, noise, leak, no start, hum, or what??? Could be a simple fix of a real PITA like the pump I'm working on now. %&@%@&#%%!(*)#

Sounds like the dying happened over a period of time so I'm thinking the motor bearings ground up. Could be an easy and cheap fix if the blasted things aren't rusted on the motor shaft like the one I'm working on. If the motor looks like it is clean with little or no obvious weathering then I'd pull it apart and explore. If you can separate the motor from the pump housing, first step, without snapping screws because of rust, that's a good sign. At this point you have nothing to lose. The motor I'm working on is so badly weathered I started using a 20 ton press to get the back bearing off and quit before I squashed the shaft. Letting liquid wrench work for a few days before trying again. I unseized it enough to check that the electrical is fine so now it's a just (ha!) a bearing replacement issue.

PS: Moral of this story....if you can cover a pump to keep the weather off it, do it. Mine is in a poolhouse, 9 years old, and looks and runs like new.

Unfortunately I don't have any solid recommendations as my experience is limited. All I can say is I recently dealt with Inyo Pools (http://www.inyopools.com) and had good results for a Hayward pump. Talked to a human, 3 day delivery from Florida and the price seemed reasonable. In my case the price was the best of a few internet sites I did check. Overall...very pleased and will probably use them again if the need arises. I'm sure others on the forum have similar stories and recommendations for other places.

Glad it's working out. I destroyed the motor I was working on. Was trying to press the rear bearing off and got it part way, then let it soak for days in liquid wrench. Tried to press it more and bent the whole rotor. Bah. One price I saw for a new motor was $170 but didn't pursue. The thing has been replaced with a new pump anyhow. If I can find a new rotor I'll give it another shot.
