First Timer closing IG in Charlotte, NC Area

Originally from Mass so we used to do a complete closing -- draining, blowing out lines, antifreeze etc..

We're new to the Charlotte area and wondering if we need to close at all or if others from around here can share the extent the pool closing process for this area.

Welcome to the South. I live in Raleigh and choose not to close at all......as do the majority of folks around here.

I turn the pump on when we get freezing temps and that's about it.

Do you leave the pump completely off the rest of the time in the winter? Or do you still run it a little each day? I'm in SC, so we stay warmer than you, and this is our first year with a pool, so I'm wondering what to do. We have a 2 speed pump that I've been running on low 24/7, and turning on high only when we get ready to swim, so the bugs get skimmed off. I'm thinking I want to put it on a timer and have the pump run a few hours in the coldest part of the night, like 3 am to 6 am.

Yeah, I still run the pump for normal maintenance and filtering.....greatly reduced because of low chlorine demand and little, if any, use.

If I had a 2-speed, I'd probably try what you're currently doing (24/7) and see if that doesn't keep it clean. Since I don't, I try to run mine a few hours at least every other day but, generally, I simply eyeball the condition of the water and run it when it looks like it needs it.
