I get a lot of black in the skimmer when we get a lot of rain sometimes, and the waterline gets really dirty - I think it is all the dust and stuff from trees mixing with the rainwater landing in the pool - just my thoughts, but I don't really know![]()
Ok, so its raining here north of Toronto, the water is near the top of the skimmer. I just opened it up and noticed a little black oil slick spinning around. is it algae, or dirt mixed in with oils? where did it come from? It wasnt there before the rain, no one swam in the pool today.
Its a 16x34 IG vinyl pool, SWG, sand filter. When I dip a paper towel in the skimmer it seems to pick it up. I checked about 1 hour later and its back. Its not a big slick, it measures about 6 inches in circumference. The pool is clear and there are no signs of algae in the pool.
Thoughts?

Acid rain just has a PH below 7.0 - I don't think that would make it black - muriatic acid isn't black.
Probably stuff that washed into the pool during the heavy rain. We get a lot of sand from our paver deck into the pool when we get a heavy rain.

Any chance you have a new 'stamped concrete' deck ...?

hey waste, you're good!! I do have a brand new stamped concrete deck. Could it be the rain washing some of the dark accent powder along with some of the sealant into the pool. It only seemed to happen that one day of really heavy heavy rain, and it wasnt really that much muck.
Not so sure about 'good', just concious. In the course of my work I see the same stuff in almost every pool with a 'stamped' deck, hope this puts your mind to rest on the 'stuff'.

Lived in Central Los Angeles for three years.
The pollution settled onto the pool daily. This is potentially what it might be - soot.
We used to scrub it out.
