I read that too and went, since my DE filter doesn't have any bypass option. I think I just filtered out a quart of that stuff.

I was just reading WaterMom's sticky on winterizing AG pools. She mentioned that after she double-doses with polyquat 60, she runs the pump bypassing the filter and says that circulating with the filter will filter out the polyquat!? Is that accurate? Does that mean whenever you use algaecide in the summer with the filter running you're throwing away the polyquat so to speak?
I then add a double dose of 60% polyquat algaecide. Don't use another type!! Put the filter on recirculate instead of filter and run it like that for a day. (If you have it set on filter, the polyquat will just filter out.)

My understanding is that it will filter SOME of the polyquat out, but not all. If you add it to the skimmer, you will lose more than if you add it to the return stream. The more it distributes throughout the water, the less you lose.
Quite frankly, when I close, I don't bother worrying about it filtering out--the FC drops sharply (normal) which tells me the Polyquat is well-distributed. I then raise FC to where I want it. It will HELP to bypass the filter, but I don't believe it's necessary, especially if you add the Polyquat to the return stream. I say this because it hasn't been a problem for ME when I close my pool.
