Is it necessary to remove the sand from the filter prior to winterizing? Or, can I just remove the drain plug & leave off to make sure there isn't water left in the filter.

No need to remove the sand.
Why BBB? Because money can't buy happiness, but saving it sure can!
Correct info. No need to remove sand. Don't forget to take the pressure gauge inside as it still has water in it and freezing will destroy it. I take my entire multi-port valve assembly inside and that lets me inspect the sand and gives me ports to connect a shop vac for blowing the pipes. Oh, and for some on this forum I have never found a problem with the sand.

i haven't, but like the idea of taking the multiport inside..the added benefit is opportunity when resetting up things in spring to put some filter cleaner in before the season starts and flush clean the sand.
Thanks for the info! I never would've thought about the pressure gauge!

I, too, remove the multiport valve and store it inside. I lube the gasket with teflon lube and seal it in a zip-lock with all the air pressed out. Actually, I do that with all the quick-release gaskets, too.
I drain the filter and cover it with a contractor grade garbage bag and duct tape it to keep it tight. I ONLY tape on the bag, not the filter.
