I am required to keep 12ppm of a metal sequestrant for salt pools during the first year in order to maintain my warranty. I did pick-up a quart from Pinch-A-Penny for about $22 because I was in there getting my mandatory weekly water test results (again the warranty thing).

The guy at the pool store told me that I would need to add about 9 oz a week to keep the right level in the pool, but that stuff is really expensive!

I started the pool with BBB - so I am shocked when I have to pay more than a few dollars for something. What other manufacturers make a comparable product?

I don't know of any other one that is made specifically for salt pools. I just don't know why it would matter what kind of sequestering agent you use, it seems that they only need to sequester the metals. I don't have a swg though - maybe Evan (Waterbear) will answer this, he has a swg

How many gallons is your pool? 9oz a week sound like a lot.

According to the literature from Jack's Magic the purple stuff is supposed to be effective at the higher TDS in a salt water pool. IMHO, Proteam's Meta Magic works just as well and is a bit less expensive (but not much). We sell it for a dollar a bottle less.

Well - I guess I am stuck with an expensive addition. Waterbear - do you keep a sequestrant in? Do I really need this other than the warranty?

If I only need it to maintain the warranty - I can do what I have done with the other chemicals - get them in range and then take a sample to the pool store. After a few weeks, I only need to take a sample once a month.

I have had some staining (the curse of fiberglass pools) so I do keep some sequesterant in but not as much as recommeded. I only put the maintenance dose in once a month and that seems to work well for me. I would follow the PB's advice for the warrenty, however. 12 ppm should work out to be the maintenace dose on the bottle. I have never run across a pool store that actually has the test kit for seqesterant (HEDP) because the test kit is SO expensive!
I assume you have a plaster pool. New plaster can be prone to staining which is why they probably want it for the warrenty. IMHO, if there are no metals in your water it is not necessary to keep it up after the first year. If you do get any stains when you discontinue it just start a thread and we will walk you through how to get rid of them! It's really not that hard but is a bit inconvenient
