    Default Replacing Old Light Assembly

    Hi,

I'm replacing a very old light assembly that does not work. I think it's an old Purex, perhaps 20 years old? w/ 10" outer ring. The reason I'm replacing the whole thing is it's full of melted resin!
    Look at these images:

Anyway, a couple questions for anyone who's done this sort of thing,
    I ordered a Pentair Amerilight.

Will this "standard" light fit the niche I have or am I going to run into problems with any replacement? I don't think I can get an exact replacement for the old one.

How do I get the cable from the new light through the conduit? Should I pull a cord through first with the old cable, or just try to attach the new cable to the old one and pull that? I'm worried about it seperating mid way.

Thanks for the advice in advance

Tie a nylon string to the old cord and pull old cord out. Then tie the nylon to the new cord and pull it back through the conduit. There should be a seperate bonding wire in the conduit already attached to the inside of the light nitche (depending on when pool was built). it is also helpful to be in the pool feeding the new cord into the conduit while someone is on the other end pulling the cord. I aslo suggest wiping some lube on the new cord to aid it in sliding through (you can use pool o-ring lube). Make sure you leave enough slack on the cord at the light end to allow you to remove the light and place it on the deck for future bulb changes.
    Good Luck

Thanks for the info. I will use a nylon cord first. I got the 30ft version so I think I'll have extra wire.

While I was inspecting and testing the transformer of the old light and the breaker panel, I don't see any obvious GFI. As I see it, I need to install a GFI breaker even though the light is 12vlt. The transformer is hardwired to a junction box. Perhaps when it was installed it wasn't required.
