    Default Aggregate Finish vs. Plaster

It is now "Do or Die" time. We will be signing on the dotted line very soon to begin construction of our new pool (34 x 22 IG SW system). Our last decision, besides tile color, is the finish of the pool. The question is:

    AGGREGATE FINISH or PLASTER?

Please supply Pros and Cons for each one.

Here is my concern. My wife and I like the look of the aggregate finish. However, we are a little concerned that the aggregate finish is a little too dark. We both like the natural look of the water. But, based on what we have read and discussed, the aggregate finish should hold up longer than the plaster. What are your thoughts????

The aggreagte finishes (like PebbleTec) may last longer but also cost more. There are plaster finishes that have been around for 30+ years - with proper water care. I think if you get sloppy on the care, the aggregate finishes will be more tolerant. Regarding the darker finish, you can get aggregate finishes in whit if you want. I went with plaster because it was 25% cheaper than aggregate and I like the smoother finish.
    Good Luck

I prefer plaster for the same reasons. I want my pool to appear crystal clear and aggregate finishes have too much texture. There's something about the smooth appearance of plaster that does it for me.

Don't buy in to the "plaster won't last as long" sales pitch. If you'll notice, the vast majority of pools are plaster. It's durable and long lasting if your pool is cared for properly.

I had the same decision when I built my pool and decided on plaster because of cost and texture. At the time, Pebble Tec was close to twice the cost of plaster and many folks were complaining about the rough texture and kids coming out of the pool with scrapped feet. However, Pebble Fina is a pretty smooth product so I don’t think that is an issue anymore but it is also very expensive.

One of the other attractions to the pebble products is their long life but if a pool’s chemistry is taken care of, it is my belief that plaster can last pretty long as well.
