Cleaning the SWCG cell monthly is not something I would do lightly. I presume you mean acid wash. It can increase cell wear.
If the pool chemistry has been out of whack for some time, or the controller is not reversing polarity correctly, then this has to be corrected before thinking of acid wash. If the system has high CH, that too may be an argument to acid wash, but again the cause and not the solution.
I have not had to acid wash my cell in over two years, and have only seen minor scale that was removed with hosing down.

I guess I should stand corrected.. I have not had mine running very long and planned to clean it at the end of the month per the owners manual. I guess it comes down to the individual system / pool.... I know it should not be weekly though.
