Pump Run-times?

I was just wondering about pump run time...
How long do most people run their filter-pumps per day?

with my old dolphino easy set 18' "donut", I used to run it about 8 hours a day.

With my IG ( 140000L with 3/4 hp pump), it was hard wired originally, but I got the elctrician to install an "off" switch in june; I have been running it 24/7 since May....

it certainly uses up the "juice"... do I need to run it all the time?

if no, then how is it done?
8 hour cycles ( run 8 hrs, off 8 hrs, run again?)

Those of you with timers, what do you set them to?

I do want to maintain "great" clean water ( & temperature is kept at 90F), but I'd like to slow down a bit on the cost of running things....
( maybe a more-efficient pump is something to think about... this one is probably really old)

I run 5 - 10 am and 5 -10 PM. I have 18,000 gal pool with 1 hp pump. This seems to work fine for me.

I run mine from 10am to 8pm this time of year to cover the hot part of the day (in Texas, very hot). Pool has been sparkling so I guess this is working. During the winter, I run it about 4 hours a day in the afternoon. If you are in a very warm to hot climate, you want to run it when the water is the warmest to keep things circulating. Oh, I also run my Polaris 3 hrs a day in the summer and 1-2 hours a day in the winter. We do not technically close our pool in the winter. No need.

I run my pump 6:00 AM to 10:00AM and then again from 1:00 PM to 6:00PM and I have a 24,000 gallon pool. I like to run the pump during the hotest times of the day so that the heat from the solor blanket distributes throughout the pool. If I run it overnight and the outside temperature goes down to 65 or so, the pool water cools down also.

thanks guys for your info.
I have a heat-pump & I live where it's chilly sometimes in summer( NS Canada).

perhaps I have to run it 24/7 just to keep my temp up
( I keep the pool at 90F)
