THe lowest end kit that most would recommend you get is the Taylor K-2006. You can order it online and have it in a day or two.
In regards to the bleach, wait till you get home at night.
I'm trying to get my pool cleared up ASAP. I went looking for a good test kit, but so far I have 4 basically worthless ones.
I started taking the advice given here yesterday. Water is turning back to blue, but not as fast as I'd hoped. I'm having a difficult time adjusting chlorine b/c I can't find a good kit locally. (I'll keep looking)
My question is this : Should I add chlorine at lunch? I add in the AM (6am) before work, and I don't get home until 6pm. I'm in bed by 9 (early, I know, but I'm up at 5:30). I check on my dog everyday around lunch. I know chlorine burns off faster in the sunlight. Should I add it during the day, or just wait until evening? Thanks
(ps, desperate newbie thread is mine with a bit more info)

nanniesrock,
In most cases, if just using bleach to chlorinate, we recommend that you add it in the evening. However, if you're trying to clear a green pool, it's a different story--the more frequently you test and add more bleach, the faster your pool will clear. So in your situation, I would go ahead and add it at lunch, too.
