Some have a raised bumps so a 2X4 will fit in to give you leverage to crank it off.
You know how the clear lid on the pump pot says "Do not overtighten". Well, apparently I did. I have been careful not to overtighten but all this swimming has made my arms stronger than I realized.Any tricks for getting that thing off without breaking it? Much thanks.

rubber mallet (gently)
The local Leslies has a tool for exactly this purpose. In fact there are two versions: one plastic, one metal; called a "Pump Lid Removal Tool".

I keep a 10 inch length of PVC pipe down near the pump, when the lid ring sticks, I tap it gently around the perimeter while using the other hand to unscrew it or at least create torque in the unscrew direction, 3-5 taps and it's off.
If the clear lid under the ring is stuck, look around the edge carefully, there will be about 4 little slits on the underside, you can put a flathead screwdriver into one and twist, this will break the suction seal and let it come off.
Mine always sticks too. I have a thin piece of pipe I keep near the lid...I just put it through the handle and twist gently....always comes off without a problem. Hope that helps..
