Another newbie needing help

On Saturday I woke up to a pool full of green water. I immediately came here and learned that I needed to shock it. On Sunday, the green was gone, but now my water is VERY cloudy. I assume it's the dead algae. Anyway, here are my water readings from the pool store today.

FC 0.5ppm
TC 0.5ppm
CC 0.1ppm
pH 7.4
Hardness 200 ppm
alk 170ppm
CYA 5ppm

My pool is 5000 gallons. I would appreciate any help you could give me. Please keep the explanation as simple as possible as I'm very new to this pool stuff. Thanks!!!

Hello Mouse! Welcome to the Forum!! The same thing was going on in my pool when I found this site. Went from green to very cloudy. Now, I am by no means an expert, but what I did was vacuum it each day and kept adding bleach to it. In a couple of days I could see the bottom and in about a week it was clear again. By looking at your numbers, I think you need to increase your CYA up to about 30-40 and keep your FC ~5ppm.

You need to keep your pool at shock levels testing 3X a day until the pool is clear (no longer cloudy) AND it is holding FC overnight. Then you can let it drift down to 2-4ppm. This may take 2-3 days or longer. The more you test and keep your pool at shock levels the quicker it will clear.

Double check your CYA reading - it is very difficult to measure anything below like 20ppm - GET a test kit and check it yourself. You can get a 6-way test from Walmart for under $20 - however you really need to get a good one. There is a good one (I have it) in the sister site http://www.poolsolutions.com

If your CYA is really that low - you need to shock to 10-15ppm, but if it is 50 (maybe you had a typo) - then you need to shock 15-20ppm.
