    Default Shocking a pool

How often, how much? Should I be doing it once a week?

with a SWG and only a basic kit that tells me total chlorine do I have to take it to the pool store everytime to test? or do I just do it once a week no matter what.

I am unsure how much ppm of chlorine I should have to be considered a shock level, currently I am running at around 5ppm FC with SWG at 60% pump running 24/7 CYA 30 (will be increasing)

Shock only if you need to. As long as your water is clear, no sign of algae, no increase in daily chlorine consumption, I would not shock. Testing for CC is a helpful indicator but isn't the "bible" on when to shock.

find the "best guess" table to get your shock level/CYA relationship.
