Interesting. Wonder what it is, but it is VERY expensive next to DE. I've been treating my filter for a year and still haven't finished the first 5# bag in a 10# box that cost me $8.
Over the past week or so, I have been reading posts about adding a little DE to you sand filter system to aid in cleaning the finer matter out of your pool water.
Last Friday while in the local pool supply store, I ran across a product called "Fiber Clear Water Polish". I pick it up and read the directions on the back of the bag, and saw were it is used as an alternative for DE filtration, and can be added to sand filters as a filter aid.
According to the directions, the Fiber Clear forms a coating over the surface of the sand bed providing much finer cleaning.
So, I purchased the smaller bag; 9 oz. for $5 plus change.
I took it home and added it through the skimmer as per the instructions. It took about 1/3 of the bag to raise the pressure on the pressure gauge one pound. After running the pump for about 4 hours, the difference in the clarity of the water was very noticable. My water has always been clear, but this stuff makes a very noticable difference.
After 1 week of using the Fiber Clear, I am very impressed with the results. The real test for me was at night when I turned the pool light, and looked down in front of the light. No more little things floating around in front of the light, it is clear.
Believe it or not, my neighbors little girl asked me; "Why don't your pool have any water in it?" We walked over to the pool, the water was perfectly still, and it did look as if there was no water there.
Now, I don't know if I will have to add more to the sand filter after I have backwashed, but if I do, I've got enough left to treat the filter at least two more times.
I am well pleased with the results of this product.

Fiber Clear is a cellulose DE substitute. It can also be used with cartridge filters.
