I was at Home Depot yesterday, and I was checking and comparing prices for regular Clorox (3.98/1.5 gal) and "deck cleaner" Clorox (4.98/1.5 gal). Of course I was UNinterested at those prices and was explaining to my DD why. An older gentleman, who was perched at the entrance hawking air conditioners, walks up to me and says, "You know, Dollar General has regular bleach for 99 cents a gallon--you don't need that stuff to clean your deck." I laughed and told him I was just checking prices, that the "deck cleaner" was just the less stable 10-12%, and that I only buy generic bleach for my pool. He replied, "Good for you! Chlorine is chlorine--you're spending your money wisely." It was the very first time in 6 years of BBB that I didn't have to defend my decision!

It's truly amazing how simple pool care can be. For lots of us, dumping in a gallon of bleach every other day can be 99% of the job!

Your BIL is clearly the stereotypical worthless brother-in-law. Buy him a one-way ticket to Palookaville!

Remember: you don't have to be nearly as nice to your sister's husband as to your spouse's brother!

Well actually it was my husbands brother!!! But you are right, they came over and swam but couldn't dump some bleach in it!! Not only that the water level was JUST about below the skimmmer line when we got home, I was more mad about that than the bleach!!

The great thing about B-B-B is that you don't HAVE to take it on faith--you don't HAVE to believe--the evidence is clear-cut and in front of you!

Ok, I'm new to this forum and I just have to ask a couple of questions. I've had a pool for 4 years now, and have never experienced bad water, green water, or anything else. The only thing I have ever experienced bad is cloudy water after a 25 person pool party, and that cleared up within 24 hours. I'm not using bleach, I've been using pucks. I don't shock unless I need it (Once this year after the pool party). I'm using a hayward 4000 cartriage filter, I have a coverstar auto pool cover, and I'm using an inline chlorinator. The pool is inground 20' x 44'. After reading this forum, it sounds like my CYA may keep rising if I keep using pucks. I don't know what this will do in the future, but I'm considering going to bleach because of this. But am I just lucky to always have good water, or what? Or is it due to the filter or the cover? After reading this forum, it sounds like everyone has problems. I don't get it. Thanks.

Most of the new posters have problems til they figure out the BBB system and trust it. Once they get it going the problems resolve and they don't post very often any more. You'll benefit from using the BBB system. You are correct in thinking the CYA will continue to rise if using pucks. Problems w/ algae usually follow at some point if it goes to high w/o adjusting chlorine levels as indicated in the Best Guess Chart.
I had a similar experience until the 5th year, then everything went wrong w/ my water and algae.

    BBB saved it.

    Good luck.
