Bleach is a blessing, we should all be thankful for it, I am that is for sure.
I started doing the BBB method a few weeks ago on the tale end of a two week battle with algea, it cleared my pool up overnight. Fast forward to this week, i was out of town for 5 days, my BIL was supposed to had half a gallon of bleach on Thursday and half on Saturday( I had added a gallon on Wednesday before I left) I figured that this would be ok. Well he didn't add the bleach and I came home this past Sunday to a green pool, I added bleach ONLY to my pool... five days later, my pool is almost clear( not two weeks with the pool store crap!)
Soooo, I will NEVER use the pool store chems again!! Thank you to the experts here who have guided me and answered my questions, I told my neighbor about the BBB method and they now have a crystal clear pool for the first time in years!!

Isn't it the COOLEST? I found the Pool Solutions site over 9 years ago and I still pinch myself to make sure I'm not dreaming. I literally used to have pool nightmares at night worrying. The Dreaded Spring Opening, the Scourge of August Algae. All bad dreams from the dark ages now. I have never looked back.
Welcome to the company of those who have seen the light at the end of the tunnel! (THANKS, BEN!!!)

Hee hee! I must be exhausted - I just looked up the definition of scourge:
A source of widespread dreadful affliction and devastation such as that caused by pestilence or war.
Yeah, I'd say that covers algae.
Say goodnight, Gracie.

Me too!!!
Yes, it is wonderful, when I can go to Walmart and spend less than $10 to get what would cost me close to $50 or more at the pool store!! I saw the Manager of our Leslies at WM the other night, he looked at all the bleach in my basket( we were fighting algae) and asked what I was cleaning, I said "my pool" I thought he was gonna heave right there!! He asked me if it was working I said, I dunno, just got home from vacation and have a green pool, why don't you come by in a day or so and see??"
He shook his head and walked away!

I was at Home Depot yesterday, and I was checking and comparing prices for regular Clorox (3.98/1.5 gal) and "deck cleaner" Clorox (4.98/1.5 gal). Of course I was UNinterested at those prices and was explaining to my DD why. An older gentleman, who was perched at the entrance hawking air conditioners, walks up to me and says, "You know, Dollar General has regular bleach for 99 cents a gallon--you don't need that stuff to clean your deck." I laughed and told him I was just checking prices, that the "deck cleaner" was just the less stable 10-12%, and that I only buy generic bleach for my pool. He replied, "Good for you! Chlorine is chlorine--you're spending your money wisely." It was the very first time in 6 years of BBB that I didn't have to defend my decision!
It's truly amazing how simple pool care can be. For lots of us, dumping in a gallon of bleach every other day can be 99% of the job!
Your BIL is clearly the stereotypical worthless brother-in-law. Buy him a one-way ticket to Palookaville!
Remember: you don't have to be nearly as nice to your sister's husband as to your spouse's brother!![]()

Well actually it was my husbands brother!!! But you are right, they came over and swam but couldn't dump some bleach in it!! Not only that the water level was JUST about below the skimmmer line when we got home, I was more mad about that than the bleach!!
