Default Does the pool pump need a cover?

One of the men who serviced my new pool made a comment that my pool pump would last longer if it had a cover.

So, I went to the local pool store and bought one.

However, it doesn't really fit and I fear that since it is plastic it will cause the pump to build up heat.

    Your thoughts and experiences?????
