Most sequesterants are based on derivatives of phosphonic acid. These can break down into orhtophosphates in the pool and cause hight phosphate levels. Be aware also that many municipalities use these same phosphonic acid derivatives in municipal water treatment!
There are some metal sequestering products based on EDTA (NaturalChemistry's Metal Free is one) that do NOT contribute to phosphates in the pool but in my own experience they are not quite as effective or long lasting and DO require regular maintenance doses.
Chitosan based clarifiers do not acutally seqester metals. They will help removed suspeded metal particles that have already precipitated out of the water but will do nothing to seqester metal ions in the water.
