I just had a similar conversation with our pool contractor for similar reasons and he told me I needed a minimum of six feet of deck for the slide.
I want to install a slide when I put in my pool, but I don't want a lot of deck on the far side of the pool near where I want the slide to be placed. I want a 4' to 6' high slide that will support 250 lbs. Nothing fancy, but with water. I've been told several different minimum decks sizes. So I am confused.
Since the pool is octagan shaped, I was wondering if I could situate the slide so that the rungs are near one of the short end sides of the octagan with the slide exiting at the long side of the pool, thereby getting by with as little deck along that long side as possible. Nothing else will be installed on that long side. Swimmers would get on the slide from the far short side of the shallow end of the pool. The water will be about 3'4" deep at slide exit. That unused long side of the pool will be next to a fence, with the other three sides having 5 to 10 feet of decking all the way around. Although I will have plenty of decking along the other (front) long side, I don't want the slide put in these areas, because it will obstruct the view of the pool.
Is there a way to situate it at the shallow end, and avoid a long side altogether? I don't mind moving my steps to the long side, instead at the end. Any ideas?

From looking into slides myself, I have found that slide manufacturers post the needed installation requirements on their websites. At least the ones that I was looking at.
Try a web search for the slides you are thinking about, you should be able to find the manufacturers site and the installation information that you are looking for. If they don't have it posted you can always contact the manufacturer.
