Sounds to me like the impellor might be worn. They'll rattle around pretty good in there if it is. Eventually it will lock up and not pump water. If you rap it good does it stop for a second? That might tell you if it's worn. The other thing is they don't have a bunch of power. So if you get a stone in it, sometimes they'll rattle around in there. That will do some damage to the impellor too. You'll want to take it apart. If you turn the filter over I believe the pump part just untwists from down there then pulls out. Be gentle though cuz it may unscrew too. Can't remember. In any event, it seems to be that some impellors are hard to come by. Might be the end of it.

The pump has been out of the box for about 24 hrs. so I really hope it's not a rock or a worn impeller already! I've been letting the air escape and checking that valve occasionally, I don't think it's trapped air either.

I'm just hoping it's not a part trying to run that's improperly seated somewhere. Guess I'll just fiddle with it a bit more.....

Ok, maybe a REALLY stupid question, but is the pump/filter full of water? I am now remembering if the pump was not 'primed' that it sounded awfully rattley...

When you open the small valve, DOES water come out?

If not, maybe you have the hose valves closed (if your model has those) or the plugs in the suction/return holes?

Give the unit a shake (technical term! ) ... perhaps there is air, or something, lodged somewhere.

Just trying to help... these are the only things I can think on on a brand new intex pump...
