The beginnings of an algae bloom are usually just cloudy water. Once the algae takes hold and there is enough of it the water will turn green. I would get the CYA up to about 40 ppm and shock the pool to about 12 ppm and KEEP IT THERE until the pool clears. The I would make sure the pool never went below 3 ppm FC. Test it every evening and add chlorine if necessary until you really get the feel for how much chlorine you need! (and do the same with the pH....test it every evening until you know exactly what it is doing in YOUR pool!)

BTW, your alk is a bit high....don't worry too much about it now but you might want to lower it a bit once you get the pool in better shape.

every pool is different....some people can get their chlorine to hold and have the pool clear in a few days....others take weeks. No hard and fast rules here. What you need is a big bottle of POP (pool owner patience)! Just keep up the chlorine level and keep cleaning the filter until the FC is holding and the pool is clear.

It is working!! I can see outline around the sides! Yeah! BUT it has turned a little green again. I will keep shocking until clear view of bottom and then lower my chlorine down some and maybe add more iron out. Sounds right or should I add the iron out now? Or is the green hue a normal part of clearing up while shocking?

Wow you guys are amazing! I had my doubts about shocking-now I totally see it works!

I just vacuumed and scraped walls and now it is all cloudy again! I am guessing I have to keep doing that too until clear!! Still greenish though.

in a word, yes...until you kill all the algae you need to keep it at shock level. If you do the pool will clear and your clorine demand will end.
