Cloudy water - here are my numbers

I received Ben's test kit and I need some help with the numbers:

I had algae 2 days ago and started bleach and added stabilizer and some borax. The water seems to be getting a little better (still cloudy, but less green) but I just did Ben's test tonight and I'm surprised at the numbers as I have added so much bleach and shock and stabilizer.

I tried to do the Cal test, but I wasn't sure about the color. Is it supposed to change from red to blue or from red to purple. I'm sure it must be a little high as we are on well water.

Not sure how your post got overlooked so long.

You need chlorine.

Can't tell you how much 'cause we need to know the gallons in your pool and if it's vinyl, FG, or concrete. Post that back and you'll get lots of good help.

I have a 30,000 gallon in-ground vinyl liner pool.

Since my last post I have added 3 and 1/2 gallons of bleach and 2 bags of shock. Pool still looks the same (cloudy, but somewhat blue) - here are my new numbers.

You are not putting in enough chlorine.

Download "bleachcalc" to do the math for you.

I would recommend that you bring your chlorine up to 16ppm this evening.

Test again just before you go to bed and bring the FC back up to 16.

Repeat this procedure tomorrow AM as well.

Follow this procedure daily until your pool clears...running your pump 24/7. The trick to this process is stay the course!

Keep the chlorine up there by testing and adding each time and keep your pump running. Some folks clear in less than 24 hours....other pools take a few days

OK - I'll get the bleachcalc and get it up to 16.

What about shocking? Should I be doing this as I do have a CC reading. Does shock have any bleach in it?

Test question: When you do the CC test and the water turns clear after adding the #2 reagent, does it sometimes go back to pink after a minute or two? Should I add more reagent - count those drops and keep waiting - maybe five minutes for no change.

6% Ultra unscented bleach adds 6ppm to every 10,000 gallons.

SHOCK is a verb - you use chlorine to shock - there are granular forms of chlorine (hypo-cal) but it adds calcium as well as chlorine.

Most people here shock their pools using plain old bleach. It tends to be cheaper and doesn't add unwanted chemicals.

Follow Duraleigh's instructions - that is shocking.

In taking your Cl level to 16 you ARE shocking. When using the BBB method, shock is an action you perform not a specific product.

Take a look at Ben's best guess table for reference in this link http://www.poolforum.com/pf2/showthread.php?t=365 to determine how much Cl you need to shock at a given CYA level.
