Get the water softner salt as pure as you can find, I think 99.8% or something like that. It will be in pellet form. Lowe's & Home Depot both carry the 40# bags. I believe they are $3-5 per bag. Once you get it home go ahead and dump it in the pool and try to "mix it up" either by swimming with it or with your leaf skimmer. Also, you can direct your returns into the path to help dissipate, if possible. Like I said earlier, start with 1/2-3/4 of the total amount you are aiming to dissolve. After a day or so see how the water feels, what level it tests at, etc. You may have a salt reading in the pool from the fill water so you want to be sure you do not over-shoot your mark.

I used solar salt and poured it into my skimmer. Takes about 5-7 minutes per #40 bag.
I used Solar Salt as well, $4 for 40 lbs at Home Depot. I'd go with the pellets as the aren't as sharp as the crystals. I just poured it in the bottom of the pool. The neighborhood kids really got a kick out of it. According to the pool store, I'm around 2,000 ppm (I know, need to up grade my Ps233 to the new Ps234S) and I notice a big difference. My skin isn't as "dry" feeling when I get out and I always swim under water with my eyes open and that's where the real difference is. Absolutely no discomfort or red eyes after spending all day in the pool.

I am a new salt water pool owner. I have the zodiac lm3. It says to keep the salt level at or near 4000 ppm. It sounds like I should be cautious on how much to add, but 1000 ppm is 25% of 4000 ppm. What should I do?
Just curious I got the salt added yesterday now when do I add the pepper???

Add pepper only when the pH gets too low. Use only 100% fine ground pepper. Whole Peppercorn will tend to clog your filter.
