I'd disconnect my pump supply line from the filter and just shoot the water straight out of the pump.
I got a lot of mud in the my pool due to the flash floods in DC metro area. I have an old DE filter that has only back-wash and filter valve - two position. Is there an easy way to use the pump to vacuum the pool but go out to waste. I was afraid to set the filter to backwash and forcing the dirt in the DE filter elements from the opposite side if used for a long time to vacuum. I want to vacuum to wast so I do not have to back wash the filter constantly due to excessive silt in the pool. Thanks

I said easy! I will give it a try. I don't know if it can be disconnected easily.

Don't know much about DE filters but how about just removing the grids or whatever they are and putting the valve in Backwash mode? You'll be running the water thru the filter but with no guts, it's effectively bypassed.
