Unhappy wooden coping for ig vinyl pool

has anyone ever heard of using a piece of 2x10 or 12 wrapped in thin foam and vinyl, as a coping at the edge of an in-ground vinyl pool? I purchased a home with a very old in-ground pool that has this type of coping/edging. the deck is poured concrete and the walls of the pool are plastic? I think. It is getting time to replace the liner which sets in with a beading material just under this coping. I'm hoping for another year on the liner, but the coping piece is wrapped in peeling, cracking vinyl (almost nagehyde-like material) and should be addressed this year. I'm wondering if this wooden piece is holding in the liner or can I remove and replace it without compromising the liner attachment.

Could you post a few pictures? It will help someone answer your question. I would like to see it to as it may help me solve a problem I have with my pool.
