Okay, dumb question time. I just poured three pounds of CYA in my skimmer a couple nights ago. What's the advantage of doing it this ingenious way as opposed to the way I did it?

When you put the cya in the skimmer it goes directly into the filter, it takes a while to dissolve, so you can't backwash for a week, or you may backwash the cya right out. That is the advantage of not putting it in the skimmer. If you just put the cya in the pool, it will lay all over the bottom until it dissolves, that is the advantage of the ingenious inventions on this forum!

Gotcha.
I'm not too worried then about adding it to the skimmer. My pool is crystal clear and there is no need to backwash any time soon. Also, I tested my CYA this morning and it is now a little under 30ppm, but not much. The Taylor test kit doesn't read under 30ppm. I added three pounds of CYA a couple days ago since I just installed a new liner.
Pouring it in the skimmer was just easier, and since the install was brand new there isn't going to be a need to backwash for a while.
Speaking of that, wouldn't it just be prudent then to backwash right before you put in the CYA, that way you'd be good to go for a while and render any need to be creative with CYA distribution useless? Or is it an issue with filters other than sand filters that you don't want to pour CYA into the skimmer?
Some AG pools like the intex donuts dont always have skimmers so other methods need to be thought up! If you have a skimmer then that is probably the easiest way to add CYA.

I bought some cya the other day & it says to dissolve it first in warm water, then pour it in the skimmer.
Wouldn't this help dissolve it quicker?
In a word....no! It will take up to a week to dissolve completely, warm water or not.Originally Posted by wetshoes1

I agree with Waterbear. That stuff just does not dissolve quickly. It makes sense that warm water would make it dissolve faster, but it does not. Just go ahead and throw it in the skimmer and then just be patient!![]()
I saw this at land+living and had to find this post again.
Not only is this a great cya delivery method..
it's ART!
Dubbed a "a 7 year experiment", SPACE 1026 is clearly turning into a succesful attempt.
"Located in Philadelphia, the 2 storey building that is home to SPACE 1026 has developed into a thriving art scene that provides both studio and gallery space for the cities up and coming community of artists.
It is a network of dozens of artists who‘ve had studios at the Space, past and present. It is dozens of artists who‘ve had shows at the Space over the last 7 years. It is dozens of artists who come to our events, and participate in our community. Space 1026 is a community - a creative community - not an institution.
The variety of work is amazing with definitely a few head turners. Especially for me is the work by Artist Rachel Vittorelli (seen above) and her series of light fixtures."
