Default Open new pool - question about adding stabilizer

I just replaced the liner in my 24'x 52" AGP (about 12,600 gallons), and am now trying to get the chemistry right. Let me know if this is a good way to go.

Obviously with new water, there is no stabilizer so I've been adding chlorine with futility. Last night I put a couple pucks in the skimmer and a couple in the floater (open full) to get things started. I have a bunch of pucks left over from last season that are still usable, so I'd like to go ahead and use them before converting to bleach. I think I read somewhere that a puck adds about 1ppm stabilizer or so to 15,000 gallons, but I can't find where I saw that. Does that number sound right?

I'm thinking that if I add about three pounds of stabilizer it should bring my levels up to around 20ppm or so. If I have read this forum correctly, I want to be in the 30-50ppm range when I convert to bleach.

Does my thinking on all this sound about right? Any input would be appreciated.

I don't know how much a puck will add in terms of CYA but I do know that it took me about 5 lbs of stabilizer to get to 30 ppm in my 24' round AG following the initial fill-up. I wouldn't wait for the pucks but would suggest you add some stabilizer now and at least get into the 20 range with it. Three lbs sounds like a good estimate to get you around 20 ppm.

You could also save the pucks to use if you plan on going away on vacation. There's no reason you can't use bleach and pucks concurrently but DON"T POUR BLEACH ANYWHERE THAT YOU HAVE (OR HAD) A PUCK - it can cause a bad reaction - pouring it in front of the return jet should be OK.

Also keep an eye on pH when you're using pucks.

Well, I put in three pounds of stabilizer last night, and added two pucks to the skimmer afterwards. I still have a couple pucks in the floater, too, so we'll see how that goes tonight when I get home from work.

The water is crystal clear and looks so inviting. I'm looking forward to swimming this evening!!

A the end of last year I used three pucks a week and used two 1 lb bags of granular chlorine shock once a week. When ever I saw any tint of green I shocked wiht a gal or two of bleach. I had good success with this and I would like to stay on this course because I dont have the time to dump bleach in every night. What procedure do u use?

    Thanx

Alrighty then, I think I'm on my way. 24' x 52" AGP, about 12,600 gallons.

This morning's water test proved to be promising.

CYA: a little under 30ppm (30 is the lowest reading on the Taylor test kit)
    ALK: 110
FC: >5 (5 is the highest reading on the Taylor) - this is promising since I haven't been able to keep chlorine in the pool until I added the stabilizer
Ph: 6.9 - I added three pounds of Borax, I'll test again tomorrow and add more as needed. This low reading was expected since I had been putting pucks in the skimmer to keep chlorine in the pool.

I'll test the Chlorine again this evening, but once the pucks I have in the floater have dissolved, I think I'll remove the floater from the pool and start with the bleach regimen. I should have this all dialed in over the next couple days, I expect.

In the meantime, it should be good to go to take a swim!
