Just make two starter hole at the top. Install the skimmer and then cut the opening.
What temp is the water?

My pool is about 3" from the skimmer hole now, but the liner is not flat against the wall by the holes. Should i install the skimmer over the liner then cut the whole out.

i'm using well water and last night the water was 74. I'll check it again at lunch today.
one more question didn't i read that you don't recomend using any type of silicon when installing the skimmer and return? thanks again hrsdennis for your help.
Just shut off the water and checked temp it is 78. I plan on putting the skimmer and pump in after work today.
The pool is heating up nice. The only time you need silicone is if you mess up and don't want to fix it right.

Assuming my gaskets get here today, I am also planning on installing the skimmer and return this evening after work. The water has been in the pool since yesterday morning, filled to right at the bottom of the return cut-in.
I have added a bit of bleach the last couple of nights and agitated the water as best I could with the leaf net. I added maybe two cups each night.
Is it safe to get in this water to install the skimmer and return? Is there anything I should be prepared for?
i installed the skimmer and the return no leaks so far, but i need to replace the O ring (i guess that's what is called) that is right in front of the pump and has another fliter like the skimmer does. it's sucking air. my pool did have a little green tint today i put in 1 gal and 46oz of ultra 6% bleach and tested after 30min. My test drops only go to 5 and it was off the chart.
I got my skimmer and return in today as well, and now I'm continuing to fill the rest of the pool. I only need about 6" of water to be at operating level, but I also need to backwash the filter before its first use, so if I go over the level I don't mind too much.
I added a few cups of bleach this evening and stirred the pool with the strainer again, so hopefully that will help a bit. I'll check the level in a few hours to see how it looks. Regardless, I'll be circulating water tomorrow afternoon at the latest, and swimming the day after that if all goes well.
