Default New Pool Set up...Inital fill test results

    Hi folks,

This year we set up a new pool. It is an Intex 15' x 48 " (approx 5,000 gal capacity) above ground metal frame vinyl pool. Last year we had a "easy set" inflatible ring pool that was just too small for us. That pool was set up for me by the friends we got it from so I just started using it and worked the chemistry as I went.

I want to get started on the right foot this year. So any advice on chemistry is greatly appreciated. I have been reading the posts and faq, but, don't seem to be seeing what I need (or am too dumb to find it). LOL

Here are the inital test results using my HTH drop test kit. I want to order Ben's new kit eventually, but, for the time being this will have to do.

Fill water (municipal water system). Test results

    CL 1
    PH 7.5
    Alk 30
    CYA None...didn't add anything yet.

So, where should I go from here. I know I need to bring the cl up....but...what should I shoot for and how do I decide how much cya i will need to add.....ph looks ok to me.

    Thanks,
    Dan

    Hi, Dan,

    1. Download mwsmith2's bleachcalc from any of his posts and put it on your desktop........you'll use it all Summer.

    2. Read and reread all the stickies on these forums...particularly the one at the top of this forum explaining the basics of pool chemistry.

    3. I don't know how long your water has been in the pool but you need to get some chlorine in it. Put 1 small jug of Clorox in late tomorrow afternoon. (.75 gal approx.)

    4. Target 30-40 CYA and 100 for Alk. You'll need to buy CYA and baking soda tomorrow and use the bleachcalc to tell you how much.

    5. Post back with questions. Welcome!

    Dave,

Thanks for the quick reply. I purchased Bleach, Borax & Baking soda today. I think I may have some CYA left from last year. Would it still be good or should I get new to be on the safe side?

After I posted initally, I was playing with the calculator and "assumed I wanted a cl level of approx 5 (is this in the ball park?) and it told me 3qt & 1 cup IIRC. So that would put your estimate right on the money.

I have been trying to read & re-read the stickies and faq's and just seem to be getting myself confused. So, please forgive any 'stupid' questions, that I probably already know the answer to, and am just too blind to see it.

    Thanks again,
    dan

    Dan,

I think your CYA is still good....give it a try.

This stuff is confusing at first but it gets easier. Keep reading and asking questions. Lots of good folks here will be glad to help you
