    Default Hot Tub Question

Where do I need to go to get advice on hot tubs? Is there a seperate kit to be used? I bought a house and I'm struggling to learn how to maintain a pool for the first time. I've been so busy with the pool I have totally ignored the hot tub. (Been here a week) I've lifted the cover on the hot tub and I see a little sand or something like dirt and a few rocks in the bottom. I know it needs to be drained - but how do you start to go about doing that? Does Ben's test kit work on hot tubs too? And how do you find out how many gallons it is?

Is this a portable hot tub or a built in one? Does it share the filtration and pumps with the pool or have it's own. Are you using chlorine, bromine, or biguinide in it? Does it have an ozonator or an ionizer? Is it concrete or acrylic? What are it's dimesions and is it just a basic tub with bench seating or does it have lounges and recliners?
sorry if it seems like a lot of questions but these are the things we need to know to try and answer yours.

As far as getting the sand and rocks out. Get the rocks out by netting them or using your hands. Best way to get sand out is with a "spa wand" which is a long tube that you pump the end to create a vacumn. they work great.

I can answer some questions, but I'll need help with a few.

It's a built in hot tub, inside it's own room.

I don't know if it shares filtration and pumps with the pool. The previous owner did mention something about using water back and forth between the pool and the hot tub. There's only one large tank outside where the sand filter is.

Chlorine was used it it. The only thing left with it were Spa pH up and Spa pH down, and an unlabled white container with a green lid. All chemical bottles look fairly old.

I don't know how to tell if it has a ozonatoror an ionizer.

    It's acrylic.

The dimesions are 7' 3" x 7' 3", edge of cover to egde of cover. There is a lounge on one side and 4 seats on the other.

Drained and cleaned the hot tub. Can I go by the best guess chart for the amount of bleach? I used the calculator to figure out my gallons - looks like 735.

If this is an indoor hot tub then you DO NOT want any CYA (stabilizer) in the water. If the hot tub has it's own filter and pump you might want to consider bromine instead of chlorine. If it share the pool water you don't have a choice but stabilizer is NOT good in a hot tub that is not exposed to the sun. If you decide to use chlorine and there is not CYA in the water then just keep the chlorine leves at about 4-6 ppm with bleach. I would try and find out more about the filtration and plumbing between the hot tub and the pool. Also, If this is an acrylic tub with molded seats the volume of water is going to be less than if it were a tub that had an even depth all over. What are the dimesions and shape. Most acrylic hot tubs are under 500 gallons and your typical 6 foot round is about 250-300 gallons!

    Waterbear,

Thanks - hot tub is indoors, so I'll skip the CYA. My husband is back in town so I can ask him about the pump and filter, but it appears to have it's own system, after looking at it. I measured 7' x 7' square - I measuered the depth from the seat at 22". I didn't measure the deepest part. It has a "double recliner" on one side, then 4 molded seats. Does the P234 work the same with the hot tub?
