New pump?? Compatible? The the most beginnerist beginner

So we just acquired our in-laws 18' above ground round pool and this thing has been a nightmare. Most recent is that apon plugging in the pump the breaker trips. We've eliminated other issues with the electric and figure it's got to be the pump.

So, we have a Proline PE71-II-H pump with a Hayward DE filter EC40CPAKS

The pump, we knew maybe had a year or two left but my father in law tried to prolong it so we've been looking at the possibility of just buying a new pump.

So questions:

Are there pumps that are compatible with the Hayward?
Does it need to be compatible?
Can I buy just the pump or would I have to buy the whole set up?

It's a 1.5HP pump a believe.

I'm not trying to break the bank as my wife already has plans in 5-7 years of getting a bigger pool.

1. You don't have to match pump & filter brands.

2. The Perflex is a pretty good filter, and will work well with a larger pool.

3. BUT . . . get the SMALLEST 2 speed pump above-ground pump available. You're just over-pressurizing the filter, and wasting electricity, with your current pump. This one -- 1 HP Powerflo Matrix -- is a good choice. If you want to upgrade to a in-ground quality pump, this is a good option -- Hayward SP2607X102S Super Pump 1.0HP 2spd -- but you MUST be careful to never run on high with your existing filter!

Either way, pumps will last longer if you put them on pavers or whatever to get them out of the damp, leaves, etc AND keep them in the shade, but well ventilated.

Great thanks so much! If my Hayward is a side discharge and this 1 HP is a top opening, do I just put a 90 on there to turn it there?

If I don't get the powerflo (only because I wanted to get the everything set up tonight and get chemicals in (we had water delivered over the weekend and I don't want it sitting there), what specs should I look for at the stores around minus- 1HP, dual speed, side discharge...anything else? does the flow rate or anything else matter?

Better to wait, and get a good pump.

You can maintain the pool without filtration -- so long as you don't swim, and add lots of 'people goo' to the pool -- by using bleach. I'd recommend Walmart's pool bleach, unless you have a better source. Use quart (4 cup) doses (4 ppm) added in the EVENING.

Also, you can use dichlor to add chlorine + stabilizer, since it dissolves very quickly. Each 1# bag of dichlor will add about 10 ppm of chlorine and 9 ppm of CYA (stabilizer). If possible, get the 24# box of dichlor sold by Sams Club. It's a good price and is (hopefully) local to you. Also, unlike almost any other dichlor available locally, it's PURE dichlor, and not mixed as a 4-n-1, 5-n-1, or 6-n-1 witch's brew. If you don't have a Sams, order the 24 x 1# In The Swim Chlorine bagged dichlor from Amazon.

Do you have a testkit? You need a good one. Strips don't count, though you can use them for now get an approximate pH reading and tell whether you have any chlorine present or not.

Get a HTH 6-Way Test Kit (~$23) (made by Taylor) from Amazon or Walmart . . . to start. Do NOT use the stabilizer / CYA test until AFTER you've added stabilizer. There are only 3x tests for CYA in that kit.

But, you'll almost certainly need the K2006 if you don't already have one.

Also, if you want to 'get it all' now, you'll also need refills for the CYA test: 16 oz bottle of R-0013 and Disposable plastic lab funnels. Try to order from Amazon rather than a 3rd party: Amazon handles shipping and warranties MUCH better.
