    Bill,

You have a lot of questions that are important. Try this site...it will answer almost everything you've asked about.

Site has some conflicting information. For example, says to add 2lbs of CYA to increase it to 30 or 40 ppm in a 15,000 pool. I have a 16,000 gallon pool and to get it to about 35ppm of cya took 4lbs. Chart is not accurate.

Site also implies you can lower TA by adding lots of muriatic acid. For a newbie seeing this, they might add 2 gallons of acid to their pool if their TA is lets say 180 ppm. If they chlorinate with stablized tablets, they will already have a low PH, let's say 7.2. Then, if they have a vinyl pool, PH will go dangerously low with that amount of acid added to a pool and posssibly destroy the liner.

Yes, it has some interesting information, but a new person could end up having trouble if they used this site only.
