I just found a small crack right where the water intake pipe goes into the valve. I figure I will have to get a new one but until then I have put a circular metal clamp over it, is this ok to do??

You should be fine smoovie... As long as its not leaking... But even if it was leaking you can probably stop a severe leak with putting a clamp and piece of rubber of some sort around the crack..

You could try some pool epoxy and then the clamp. It will probably still leak but should slow it down significantly. Replacement is best.
