Looking for DE

I have a sand filter and am looking to try adding DE to it according to what has been suggested on this forum. There is only one pool store in town and they don't sell it anymore. As I search online there are all kinds of things that come up when you search for DE, I didn't know you could use it to kill bugs, and apparently you can drink it (yuck?). The pool store sells a "clarifier" that is supposed to assist the filter for $35 for 1.5 lbs, but there is no label indicating what is in it, and when you open it it is a white powder and probably just DE.

Are there any suggestions if a person wants to get a small amount of DE to assist a sand filter? Is DE the same in all its forms and packaging? Or is there a certain kind?

I bought my DE at Home Depot. It's crushed to the right size for pools and it is called Pool Time D.E. Filter Powder. It came in a 25lb box and it will last forever. It think I paid around 20 bucks for it. Don't get the smaller bags, they may also contain cellulose and you don't want that. That may be what your pool atore has. Avoid it!
