    Default LED Lighting Questions

Pool came with the house, previous owner installed 2 each Next Step Products IGP 231 LED lights. These screw into a standard incandescent style housing. One of them is fried. It appears that the gasket leaked, which must not be a good thing, as the plastic housing of the bulb itself appears to have gotten hot enough to slightly melt it and burn the edge of the bulb assembly.

This product is discontinued. Before I go turning the internet upside down to find one replacement on somebody's dusty warehouse shelf, I wanted to check to see if it's a bad design. If so, what should I be looking to switch to? I don't necessarily need the high-end stuff, but with one LED and one incandescent, I can really see the difference.

If the design is OK, and I just need to find a replacement, is there a suitable substitute that will work with my Jandy Aqualink RS controller?

I'm a pool maintenance noob, but pretty proficient mechanically, so plan on doing this myself, unless you scare me off with warnings. My pool guy is a bargain for the routine cleaning stuff, but nicks me $80/hour for anything beyond that, including changing a light bulb (which I'll be doing myself in the future).
    Thanks,
    Greg

    Question Re: LED Lighting Questions

Is the wiring supply to the light 120V A/C or 12V DC? I've always thought I might do LEDs at some point in the future but my pool light niche is wired for 120VAC. I don't like the idea of doing the AC/DC conversion under water as the circuitry involved gets hot. If I was wired for low voltage from the get-go, I'd be fine with it.

I'm wondering if your previous owner originally had standard halogen lights and then decided to "upgrade" to LEDs. I know that Pentair's IntelliBright lighting specifically and clearly spells out that replacing halogens with LEDs are only U/L Certified IF they are in specific Pentair light niches. In other words, no hooptie-jobs allowed.

    Just thinking out loud FWIW.....
16k gal IG gunite PebbleTec (Caribbean Blue), 18' x 36' free form with raised spa/spillway and separate rock waterfall. All Pentair Equipment pad - 3HP IntelliFlo VS / 1.5HP WhisperFlo, MasterTemp 400k BTU/hr heater, QuadDE-100 filter, IC40 SWCG, IntelliTouch/EasyTouch Controls
