I am a pool dummy trying to educate myself. What is a AG liner. We are looking at. 16x40 and a 16x32 inground pool..would a variable pump be the best choice? Hayward vs Pentair..and are you fimiliar with Matrix pool system?

AG: Above Ground
Liner: A giant vinyl "bag" that seals the pool. Virtually ALL AG pools use them (there are rare, very rare and expensive exceptions), as do many inground pools (IG--Inground).
Other IG pools can use masonry--concrete, shotkrete, pebbletec, tile, plaster, etc. Also, one-piece fiberglass pools are also used as IG pools.
Vinyl's strengths are low, cost, low maintenance, and ease of installation and replacement, and no need of calcium in the water. It is fairly impervious to all calcium and many total alkalinity level.
Its drawbacks are it can be pierced or torn, is sensitive to low pH, and can fade due to excessive chlorine and sunlight.
A well-maintained vinyl liner can last from 10 to 25 years. A masonry pool may need surface maintenance anywhere from every 5-10 years. Fiberglass is subject to bubbling and delaminating, just like boats, and can be very limiting in terms of size.
