Hi, and welcome!
As far as pumps go, as you might expect there are myriad choices. Much is determined by the type and size of the pool, the filter you select and what water features, if any, your pool will have.
The one GOLDEN RULE is that the capacity for whatever filter you elect to use MUST be greater than the pump you choose! No matter how small or big, how simple or fancy, this is an absolute truth!
Next, more horsepower's GREAT if you like big engines in cars, trucks, boats, etc. But in a pool, mostly it burns electricity and wastes money, even if it's sized correctly to your filter (if it's too big--and many, MANY pool dealers push too-big pumps--it can damage the filter).
Another thing people look at is VS (Variable Speed) pumps. These tend to be more expensive and require a surge protector. If you live in an area with lots of brown-outs and thunderstorms it's a bad idea. Many of us go for the low-tech alternative, a 2 speed pump. The difference in efficiency isn't great, and they are much more robust in resistance to electrical problems, and don't need surge suppression.
Here's what our site-owner has to say on the subject.
