I would NEVER recommend letting your pH go below 7.0, let alone keeping it there. While in the lab 7.0 is "neutral", in the pool it is BELOW the optimal range of 7.2-7.8! I strongly recommend you use 7.0-7.2 as your range rather than 6.8-7.0.

If you have a vinyl lined pool anything below 7.0 can start to do damage to it. Water is easier on your swimmers' eyes, too, in the mid sevens.

From what little I know, your description of the process is accurate, as is you thought to make your final raise with aeration.

Hope you didn't pay too much for the pH Plus! product. I see Washing Soda (same thing) for about $1/lb.

I was following the instructions on the Pool Solutions website which suggests holding the pH low until the Alk has corrected. Those instructions say no lower than 6.6, or the bottom of the scale for the kit being used. The bottom two tiers on my kit are 6.8 and 7.2, so I have been keeping the color right between those two, probably close to 7.0. I am only doing that for this process and will let it come back up to 7.5 when the Alk is corrected. My goal is Alk 110, pH 7.5.

So i have gotten my total alk back to 120 ppm using dry acid. I have found that aerating the pool will get the pH back to 7.2, but not much higher than that. I bought some 20 mule team Borax to raise the pH back to 7.5 and if I understand this correctly, this should not affect the TA?
