    Red face 1st Post

I will be getting one of the recommended test kits. Up to now I have gotten by with guess-strips. I have had my pool for 7 years and have had minimal issues to date. But the last couple of years I cant keep the algae out. Not sure even what kind it is....Looking forward to joining the community and learning.

    Thanks

    Patrick

    Welcome!

We see this a lot. Most of the time the pool owner has been chlorinating with trichlor tablets and dichlor powder, not realizing that the stabilizer level has increased so much that "standard" chlorine levels are ineffective at killing algae and much high dosages are needed--and that neither trichlor nor dichlor can any longer be used. This is why we recommend bleach or liquid chlorine as the primary means of chlorination.

    Thanks Carl!

I completely emptied my pool, scrubbed it down with HC acid and 3 weeks later the algae is back with a vengeance. tested with new kit today. All levels look good. I will send a picture tomorrow. I have yellow film on the sides and black spots about 3x3 feet in several areas around my pool. I will take my water to pool store tomorrow to get accurate reading...

    Thanks again

Better than a picture, post your test results, for
    FC
    CC
    pH
    TA
    CH
    CYA (stabilizer)

Don't bother with acid demand or base demand tests.

Also tell us about your pool:
    How many gallons?
What is it--Vinyl, Fiberglass, Concrete, Tile, etc (I presume it's some sort of masonry. )
    What kind and size pump?
    What kind and size filter?
Do you have a spa, or water effects?
Heated, if so, with what kind of heater?
Do you have/use an SWCG (salt-water chlorine generator)?
Any other information? (In-line chlorinator, Nature2, etc)
What are you putting in your water for chlorination and any other chemicals you are using?

All this will help us help you even more than pictures.
    Carl
