I`ve had a 35K inground for 12 years and am familiar with pumps, filters, plumbing, and swearing.
Water chemistry has always been a hit-n-miss, OMG- it`s green thing with me.
So I`ll be paying a great deal of attention to you folks, both your mishaps, solutions, and the answers you get.
Promise not to be a pest, unless I go out tomorrow and the neighbors hear-OMG, it`s green.

I am going to recommend that you do a couple of things. All of them will make your pool care much easier.

-- Invest in a good test kit. The test kit that we think is by far the best is the Taylor K2006 or 2006C (better buy). Not available locally but you can get it through this link that takes you to Amazon: http://pool9.net/tk/

-- Read a lot of posts here on the forum and also over on our sister website www.poolsolutions.com
-- Answer a few questions for me:

1) Is this a freshly filled pool or has it been up and running for awhile?
2) What all have you added to the water thus far?
3) How does the water look?
4) Is your fill water city water or well water?
5) What kind and size filter do you have?
6) What size (hp) pump?

Filled and running for 2-3 months.

A bunch of junk from our friendly, neighborhood pool store. My daughter's participation in pool maintenance. That's the best I can give you on what went in before she said the water looked funny. No, not funny Ha-Ha, but funny cloudy with chance of green algae.
I have dumped 2 gallons of bleach(8.25%) in.

Clearing nicely.

1 hp.
It`s a 18 foot round, 52 in. deep AGP. Holding around 84, 8500 gallons. The pump has been running 5 hrs.a day.
I`m assuming you inspect elementary particles, not dairy products---but I could be wrong.

From a quick glance, I worry that your pump is too big for your filter. Hayward rates the filter at a maximum of 50gpm, but their own 1 hp above ground pumps don't get below that until you have 50' of head--long plumbing.
What brand and model of pump is it?

A 1 hp pump on an 8500 gal pool is certainly over-kill, even for an up-rated pump. I have a 1hp 2spd on my pool and it's far larger and STILL my 200# sand filter is barely within spec at full speed.

I suspect you need a smaller pump, or a smaller impeller on you pump, or a bigger filter.

You`re probably right. It was a package deal from the dealer.
It`s a Hayward Power Flow-LX, 1hp.@60gpm.---running into a Hayward C4001575XES cartridge filter, using the CX410RE-40 sq.ft. cartridge.
Dose spit the water back out the return with, how should I put it, GUSTO works.
Good news is the algae problem was nipped in it`s nasty little green buds and the pool is almost back to crystal clarity.
Two vacuumings, some brush work, and looks like one more vacuum job will make this an ugly memory.
Do you think I will blast the cartridge apart, figurative not literal, with this combination pump/filter?
Really don`t want to have to change(spend money on)anything this early on.
What do you suggest?

I'd like PoolDoc or one of the other pump experts to comment. They'll probably suggest putting in a smaller impeller to reduce the pump's GPM.

You could get a 3/4hp impeller and a new shaft seal for about $70.

Not a bad price, but still not sure what the damage the pump flow as is will cause????
I just went and looked at what pulling the pump would rate on John`s grief-n-sweat scale and noticed...
The installers used silicone caulk on ALL the pump/filter fittings...a big thanks guys rolled between my ears-other things came out of my mouth.
If I choose to pull the pump, I`m really hoping they didn`t silicone the union between pump and filter and the hose connection.
Guess it will be the amount of potential damage leaving it would cause that will make the decision for me.

Take a look, are you sure it's silicone? A non-hardening thread seal would be appropriate and should come free with some encouragement. It you do replace the shaft seal, be careful with it - it's a no-lube / no fingerprints sort of thing.

Nope, no luck for me Big Dave.
It`s clear silicone caulking.
I don`t see anything on the union between pump and filter housing--so fingers crossed.
I wouldn`t pull the impeller, change the seal myself. I just don`t have the tools and equipment needed.
As I recall, even when I had the right pullers it was still a "touchy" little job.
I would pull the pump and take it somewhere that deals with pump motors if I really have to do it.
