Are the threads stripped or is the screw head damaged where the screwdriver turns it? There is a special tool called a screw extractor that can engage a damaged screw after drilling a small hole in it.

Does it still sound like a spider gasket or something else?
Maybe the new spider gasket was damaged because you couldn't push the handle all the way down before turning it.

Can anyone direct me how to replace a mpv?
Perhaps you can just replace the top of the valve and internals.

The screw head is damaged so that a screwdriver can't get a grip on it. Thanks I will look into getting the screw extractor. I'll update as soon as we can get in and see what happened to the gasket and go from there.
