I cannot imagine more than 1 skimmer, 1 low drain, and 1 return. I have almost 20,000 gallons in a 16x40 with a 5.5 deep end and that's all I have or need.Originally Posted by eljefe281
What criteria might one use to determine the appropriate number of returns/inlets to the pool from the pump/filter?
The pool in question is not yet constructed, but it is tentatively planned to be 10' x 33', with an average depth of 4', for a total capacity of just under 10,000 gallons.
Thanks ever so much.

We are in the middle of Oklahoma where the wind does a lot of sweeping down the plains. We have been told by serval folks that if your pool is exposed to the wind and you are have a lot of it, then you want two skimmers, one for summer winds, in our case south wind, and one for the winter wind, in our case north wind. If you don't have a lot of wind, than it probably is not an issue.

OK. Then 2 skimmers rather than one for special circumstances. But still only low drain and one return. It's not a very big pool.

I have 4 returns and two skimmers and I am glad I have them. I use one return for each skimmer pointed towards the skimmer. The other two returns are pointed down to get the solar heat a bit deeper into the pool. I almost wish I had those returns plumbed closer to the bottom of the pool.

I have an 18 x 36 diving pool 3.5 to 8 ft. I have one skimmer, two returns, no main drain, and a polaris. It stays clean and crystal clear.
