You're right, 58ppm CYA is on the little high side of pretty good for most pools. Can you return the tabs? Take em back - then go buy bleach - Generic at the grocery or wall mart no scents or other special feature bleach.
My name is Tom. First time pool owner. 8 x 15 oval above ground vinyl...hayward s166t sand filter...1.5 pump. I have been studying BBB method. Awaiting delivery of my Taylor test kit....Now at mercy of local pool store. TA 111 PH 7.6 FC 15 CYA 58....water clear and comfortable. Pool store sold me 3 in chlorine tabs for skimmer. I am afraid they will increase my CYA. Any reccomendations ....Thanks Tom

Thanks for your response. At what level of FC should I add bleach?
I have a few questions for you:
-- What is the volume of your pool?
-- How long has your pool been up and running?
-- What all have you been using thus far in your pool. Give ingredients.
-- Have you opened the tabs? If not, as Dave said, take them back!
-- How many pounds of sand does that filter hold?
-- Do you have any kind of drops-based kit to use until your Taylor kit arrives? (If not, get an OTO/Phenol Red kit (yellow and red drops).
That is a might big pump for this small pool, by the way!
Welcome to the Pool Forum!
With a CYA for 60ppm the FC should be kept above 5ppm at all times. Please take a look at the Best Guess Chart page http://pool9.net/cl-cya/. It explains the basis of the method of pool care taught here and gives you a chart to find target FC level based on CYA. As a trial user, you'll need to copy the URL, log out of PoolForum then paste the URL into your browser.
Pool volume 2800. Up and running 10 days. 8lb balance pak 100. 4oz inhibit back up. 2lb balance pak 200. 3/4 lb stabilizer 100. 100 lb of sand in th filter....It now know the pump is too big....I will pick up the drops when I get off work. Thanks for the Help... Tom
Would you please read the labels of that Bioguard stuff and tell us what's the chemical makeup of each? Chemical name and percentage. Have you looked at the Best Guess page?
Not at home to get the Chemical name and percentage...will get them later. I have looked at the Best Guess Chart and understand how you came up with a Min 5 fc....Target 7 fc based on CYA level 58 and its relation to FC.
